Buenos Aires recipe, Edinburgh oven

Two soft biscuits. Dulce de leche in between.

Alfajores are Argentina's favourite sweet: crumbly, buttery biscuits sandwiched with slow-cooked caramel. We bake them by hand in Edinburgh and post them across the UK.

An illustrated alfajor: two biscuits with dulce de leche

Never had one?

What is an alfajor, exactly?

Say it al-fa-HOR. It is two soft, crumbly biscuits (think shortbread that forgot to be firm) joined with a thick layer of dulce de leche, a caramel made by simmering milk and sugar for hours until it turns deep gold.

Some are rolled in desiccated coconut. Some are dipped in chocolate. All of them are a small event with a cup of tea or coffee.
